Unidentified objects are typically distant, small, fast, or filmed at night through zoom and infrared — conditions that degrade any camera, including military sensors.
Cameras improved a thousandfold; UFO photos didn't. Skeptics read that as evidence the phenomenon lives in the margins of perception and optics — and it is their strongest argument.

Every phone now carries a better camera than the entire 1990s, and the era of the crisp, close, daylight UFO photograph never arrived. Skeptics are right about what that means, as far as it goes: photographs that are good enough to analyze are good enough to identify, and they get identified. The unexplained residue self-selects for bad images.
It cuts the other way too. Because photographs resolve so reliably into balloons and jets and Starlink trains, the cases that survive don't rest on photographs. The Belgian Wave's most famous photo was confessed a hoax — and the case's radar lock-ons and thousands of ground witnesses survived it. The Nimitz case matters because of two weeks of warship radar tracks and four aviators, not because FLIR1 is pretty.
